Melbourne: Rafael Nadal has defeated Grigor Dimitrov in a tough five set match by 6-3, 5-7, 7-6, (7/5), 6-7, 6-4, he will now face his past rival Roger Federer for one more time.
The epic match lasted for 4hr and 56 min and tennis fans wishes came true for a historic final, this can very well be the last time these two legendary athletes face each other in finals of a major tournament.
“It’s hard to try and describe my emotions. First of all I was tired and Grigor was playing unbelievable. It was a great match. I feel very happy to be part of it. I enjoyed it a lot, the crowd was amazing. Many thanks for that, huge support these two weeks.
“When you work hard and have tough moments it’s amazing to be here. Last year was tough for me because it takes a while to get back to my level.I worked a lot during the last month and a half at home, but I never dreamed I would be back in the final of the Australian Open. I’m very very happy,” Nadal said after the match.
Regarding the final against Roger Federer he said: “First of all I hope to recover well, and then for me it’s a privilege and very special thing for both of us to be in a major final again and have the chance to compete against each other after both having difficult times. “
For the first time in history four players over the age of 30 made it to the finals and now tennis fans have the pleasure of witnessing a classical ending to Australian Open.
The last match played between these two players is considered as the greatest match ever played in the history of the game, Nadal defeated Federer 9-7 in the fifth set. This will be their ninth grand slam final.
Roger Federer is looking for his 18th grand slam title while Rafael Nadal is chasing his 15th.
If Nadal wins this Australian Open title he will become the first player ever to win all the grand slams of twice in the Open era.
